Art inspires art. Our season opening concert brings back Seattle artist Adrian Wyard and his stunning visuals as the Auburn Symphony Orchestra performs Mussorgsky’s epic Pictures at an Exhibition. “The Gnome”, “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks”, “The Market” and more are brought to life with Wyard’s visuals. Also featured is the overture to Russlan and Ludmilla by Mikhail Glinka and Adam Schoenberg’s GrammyⓇ-nominated Picture Studies: a “Pictures at an Exhibition” for the 21st century.

Few composers loom as large as Ludwig van Beethoven, born 250 years ago this year. His monumental Symphony No. 7, alongside the rest of his canon, inspired composers for centuries including three iconic American composers: Leonard Bernstein, George Walker, and Aaron Copland. Sam Almaguer, principal clarinetist of the North Carolina Symphony, joins Maestro Schulz and the Orchestra for Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, a jazzy American masterpiece. Experience Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from the blues Broadway hit On the Town and Walker’s Lyric for Strings, noted for its eloquent beauty.

From operas to tone poems, Richard Strauss’ compositions tell a compelling story. Celebrate the varied repertoire of this great German composer through the prankster in Till Eulenspiegel and the complicated and comical love story in Der Rosenkavalier. Pianist Anton Nel joins the Orchestra for Strauss’ Burleske which includes playful themes, dramatic moments, and exuberant energy. The program begins with the Overture to The Wreckers, an opera by Ethel Smyth produced in 1903 by the Metropolitan Opera which remained for more than a century the only opera by a woman composer ever mounted by the company.
